What the eye shape test measures
The eye shape test at faceshapetest.app is a free tool that measures the shape of your eyes from one front-facing photo. It reads 478 points on your face with MediaPipe Face Landmarker, entirely in your browser. The photo never leaves your device, there is no sign-up, and it takes about a second.
Openness is eye height divided by eye width, the palpebral fissure aspect ratio. It is reported as a percentile against 3,079 frontal faces from a public face-shape dataset, so 50 is a typical eye.
Tilt is canthal tilt in degrees, the angle from inner corner to outer corner, corrected for head roll. Positive means the outer corner sits higher. It is the same number the canthal tilt calculator reports.
Spacing is the distance between the inner corners divided by average eye width, with a percentile. The old rule that eyes sit one eye width apart is exactly 1.0 here.
Eye width compares each eye to the width of your face at the cheekbones, as a percentile. Symmetry mirrors the left eye's landmarks onto the right and scores the match from 0 to 100.
The reference faces are women in celebrity photos, the public dataset with clean frontal labels, so a percentile is a ranking among those faces, not a grade, and says nothing about attractiveness.
Each reading is taken per eye and averaged. Openness and tilt decide which of five eye shapes the tool reports. The same photo also gives your face shape and a face symmetry reading, from the same landmarks.
The five measured eye shapes
Most guides hand you nine or ten names to pick from by eye. This test narrows the list to the five a front photo can measure and assigns them in a fixed order: downturned first, from tilt; then round and elongated, from openness; then upturned, from tilt again. Anything left is almond.

All five are normal and none is a score. You may have seen eyes sorted online into "hunter eyes" and "prey eyes"; this test does not use those labels, because they describe a preference, not a measurement.
Almond
Almond eyes have a visible upper and lower lid, a gentle point at the outer corner, and a width clearly greater than the height. The test reads almond when openness sits in the broad middle and tilt is above +2 degrees without reaching the top fifth. It is the default, the shape most adults have.
Round
Round eyes are taller for their width, so more white shows above and below the iris and the lid curve is more circular than pointed. The test reads round when openness lands in roughly the top fifth. It is a ratio, so a small eye that is tall for its width still reads round.
Upturned
Upturned eyes have an outer corner above the inner corner, so the lower lid sweeps up toward the temple. The test reads upturned when tilt lands in roughly the top fifth and is clearly positive, unless openness already placed the eye as round or elongated. A smile lifts the corners, so retake a smiling photo.
Downturned
Downturned eyes have an outer corner level with or slightly below the inner corner. It is a common variant at every age, and more common with age as the outer corner descends. The test reads downturned when the roll-corrected tilt is at or below +2 degrees, a neutral or negative canthal tilt.
Elongated
Elongated eyes are wide for their height, with lids close to the iris. It is a shape word, not a judgment, and often the outline of a monolid or hooded eye. The test reads elongated in roughly the bottom fifth of openness, which a squint or smile also produces, so retake if it surprises you.
Hooded, monolid, deep-set and protruding: what a photo cannot see
Several of the most searched eye shapes describe the eyelid and the socket, not the outline. A front photo flattens the depth they live in, so the landmark model cannot see them reliably, and the tool says so rather than guessing.
Hooded eyes have extra skin or fat in the upper lid that folds over the crease, hiding it partly or fully when the eye is open. The opening itself can be any of the five shapes. Hooding is extremely common and increases with age as brow and lid skin descend.
Monolid eyes have no visible crease; the upper lid runs smoothly from lash line to brow. Monolids are the majority pattern among a large share of East Asian people and appear elsewhere too, and can be wide, narrow, upturned or downturned.
Deep-set eyes sit further back in the socket under a prominent brow bone; protruding eyes sit further forward. Both are depth toward the camera, which a front photo cannot measure and a side view can.
So the tool never reports these from the landmarks. After the reading it asks one optional question, the one thing the camera cannot see:
When you look straight ahead, is the crease above your lashes visible, partly hidden by a fold, or not there?
"Partly hidden" adds hooded to your reading and "not there" adds monolid. It is not a quiz, and skipping it changes nothing; the lid descriptor simply sits alongside the measured shape.
The mirror check
Face a mirror in even light, look straight ahead, relaxed, brows down. A distinct fold with lid skin showing above and below it is a visible crease. A fold that skin from above drapes over and partly hides is a hooded eye. A smooth lid with no fold is a monolid.
A crease that shows on one eye and hides on the other, or hides by evening, is normal. Pick the answer that describes most days.
Close-set, wide-set and eye size
Spacing is the second most asked question, usually as "are my eyes close together." The tool divides the distance between your inner corners by your average eye width, so 1.0 is the old art-class rule of one eye width between the eyes.
Real faces scatter on both sides of 1.0. Roughly the bottom fifth of the reference faces read close-set, which draws attention to the bridge of the nose; the top fifth read wide-set, which opens the centre of the face. Neither is unusual.
Camera distance moves this reading more than any other. A phone held close enlarges the centre of the face and pushes the inner corners apart, so spacing reads wider than it is. Step back to arm's length.
Eye width relative to face width is the size reading: compact means your eyes take a smaller share of the cheekbone width than most reference faces, wide a larger share. It is separate from openness; an eye can be wide and elongated, or compact and round.
Eye symmetry mirrors the eye landmarks across the midline. Scores in the 80s and 90s are typical of a clean frontal photo; lower usually means the head was turned or light fell on one side.
Makeup and lashes for each eye shape
Makeup changes none of the measurements. It changes where a viewer's eye lands first. These notes apply to anyone who wears makeup, and each is a starting point rather than a rule.
Almond eyes
Almond eyes take almost any placement. Liner with a short flick continues the natural outer point. Shadow works in the classic three zones: light on the lid, medium in the crease, darker at the outer corner. Even-length lashes suit the balanced shape.
Round eyes
To lengthen a round eye, keep liner thin at the inner half and thicken it toward a horizontal wing, blending shadow outward rather than up. Lashes longer at the outer third stretch the eye sideways; to keep the roundness, curl and tightline instead.
Upturned eyes
Upturned eyes already have lift, so liner can follow the lash line with no wing, or a wing that runs straight out. A little shadow along the outer lower lash line balances the sweep. Even-length lashes keep the eye from tilting further.
Downturned eyes
For a downturned eye, stop the upper liner before the outer corner and angle the wing up toward the tail of the brow. Keep the outer third of the lower lash line bare, place the darkest shadow above the outer crease, and keep lashes longest at the outer third.
Elongated eyes
An elongated eye gains height from anything that opens the centre: curled lashes, a lighter shade or small highlight in the middle of the lid, thin liner. Lashes longest at the centre add height; a heavy wing adds length you already have.
Hooded eyes
On a hooded eye, apply with the eye open, because the fold hides the lid when you look ahead. Place the crease shade slightly above the true crease so it shows. Keep liner thin and long-wearing, because the fold transfers it. Short, strongly curled lashes stay clear of the fold.
Monolid eyes
A monolid has no crease to place shadow in, so build a gradient instead: darkest at the lash line, fading up toward the brow, checked with the eye open. Liner can be thicker, because more of it stays visible. Curl matters more than length; lashes that lift straight up open the eye.
Brows, glasses and hair around the eyes
Brows
Brow shape is the biggest lever after liner. On upturned and almond eyes, a brow that follows the eye's own lift keeps proportion. On downturned eyes, a higher arch and a tail that ends above the outer corner, never below it, lifts the eye.
Round eyes suit a defined arch rather than a rounded one, since two stacked curves read rounder still. Elongated eyes suit a flatter, straighter brow close to the eye, which also makes hooded and monolid eyes look more open.
On close-set eyes, begin the brow slightly further out than the inner corner and keep the inner ends clean. On wide-set eyes, start directly above or a touch inside the inner corner to draw the two together.
Glasses
For close-set eyes, choose a clear or thin bridge, a lighter colour at the centre, and detail or colour at the temples, which pulls attention outward.
For wide-set eyes, do the opposite: a thicker or darker bridge, a frame not much wider than your face, and simpler temples. A low or keyhole bridge draws the eyes together.
Upswept cat-eye frames lift a downturned eye; round eyes look balanced in angular frames; elongated and hooded eyes suit more lens height so the rim does not cut across the lid. The face shape guides cover the outer outline.
Hair
A fringe that ends at the brow frames all five shapes; one that falls below the brow shades hooded and downturned eyes. Side-swept fringes and cheekbone-level layers add width beside close-set eyes and calm the space between wide-set eyes.
How to get an accurate reading
Openness is the most expression-sensitive reading on the site and spacing the most camera-sensitive, so a few habits decide whether a result repeats.
- Use a relaxed, neutral face, mouth closed. A smile narrows the eyes and lifts the outer corners, pushing the label toward elongated or upturned.
- Keep your eyes fully open and look straight at the lens. Looking down, up or sideways changes the height of the opening.
- Hold the camera at eye level, arm's length or further, then crop. A close lens spreads the inner corners and inflates spacing.
- Face the camera straight on. The test flags a photo past 12 degrees of turn and asks for a retake past 25.
- Use even front light. Side light shadows one eye and drops the symmetry score; bright light makes you squint.
- Take off glasses and skip heavy false lashes or thick liner; both shift where the model places the lid points.
- Pull hair and fringe back from the brows and outer corners.
Take two or three photos under the same conditions. If the label and the percentiles agree, you have a stable reading. If not, the photo changed, not your eyes.

Does eye shape change with age?
The outline changes slowly.
