What the jawline test measures

The jawline test at faceshapetest.app is a free tool that measures the shape of your jaw from one front-facing photo. It reads 478 points on your face with MediaPipe Face Landmarker, entirely in your browser. The photo never leaves your device, there is no sign-up, and it takes about a second on phone or desktop.

From those landmarks the test reports four readings: your jaw-to-cheek ratio, your jaw angle, your chin angle, and a jaw symmetry score. Each one is a geometric measurement of where your jaw corners, cheekbones and chin sit in the photo.

The width ratio then becomes a jaw definition number from 0 to 100. That number is a percentile rank against 3,000 frontal faces from a public face-shape dataset, so 50 means a typical jaw. It comes with one of four labels: Angular, Defined, Tapered or Narrow.

Jawline is one of the most-searched features of the face, and much of what ranks for it is a product pitch or a myth. This page measures what a photo can actually show, explains what moves the number, and is honest about what does not.

The same scan produces your face shape, a symmetry reading, an attractiveness score, a golden ratio score and your canthal tilt, all from one photo and one pass of the landmark model.

What is a good jawline score?

There is no pass mark. The definition score is a percentile, so it tells you where your jaw width sits among 3,000 real faces, not whether it is right or wrong. A score of 50 is the middle; 90 is wider than nine faces in ten.

The four labels are set by the jaw-to-cheek ratio itself, and they line up with face shapes more than with anything else.

Tapered is the most common label by a wide margin, because the median ratio across the dataset is 0.66 and the middle half of faces sit between 0.61 and 0.71. If you land there, your jaw is doing exactly what most jaws do.

Narrow is a face-shape feature, not a flaw. Heart-shaped and inverted-triangle faces sit here naturally, with cheekbones that carry the width and a jaw that tapers cleanly to the chin. It is also the label a close-up phone, a chin-down tilt or a broad smile produces on almost anyone, so check the photo first.

None of the labels describe attractiveness. Preferences vary across cultures, across time and between individuals, and no single jaw shape wins.

Jaw to cheek ratio, jaw angle and chin angle explained

Jaw to cheek ratio

This is the width of your jaw, measured at the level of your lower lip, divided by the width of your face at the cheekbones. A ratio of 1.0 would mean a jaw as wide as the cheekbones. Real faces never reach that, because every face tapers below the cheekbones.

Across the 3,000 frontal faces in our reference dataset, the median is 0.66. The middle half of faces sit between 0.61 and 0.71. Below 0.57 is the narrowest tenth, and above 0.75 is the widest tenth.

Face shape tracks this ratio closely. Square faces have a median of 0.72, round faces 0.68, oval and oblong faces 0.64, and heart faces 0.62. That is why the labels line up with the categories on the face shape test.

Jaw angle

The jaw angle is measured at each corner of the jaw, between the line up to the cheekbone and the line in to the chin, then averaged over both sides. A smaller angle means a sharper, more turned corner. A larger angle means a smoother, rounder line from cheek to chin.

In the same dataset it runs from about 128 degrees for the most angular tenth of faces to about 144 degrees for the softest tenth, with a median of 137 degrees.

This is a frontal-view proxy for the gonial angle, the number a dentist measures on a profile X-ray. It tracks the true gonial angle but is not the same number, and it is strongly tied to the width ratio. A wide jaw at lower-lip level almost always produces a sharper frontal angle.

Chin angle

The chin angle is the angle at the tip of your chin between the lines to the two jaw corners. A smaller angle is a more pointed chin, a larger angle a broader one. It runs from about 101 degrees, pointed, to 126 degrees, broad, with a median of 112.

A narrow jaw usually comes with a pointed chin, the classic heart-shape pattern. A wide jaw can end in a broad chin, the square-face pattern, or in a comparatively pointed one, which reads as a strong but tapering jaw.

Jaw symmetry

The fourth reading mirrors your left and right jaw corners and cheek landmarks across the midline of your face and scores how closely they match, from 0 to 100. It is the jaw-and-cheek region of the full symmetry test, pulled out on its own.

No jaw is perfectly symmetric. Chewing habits, sleeping position and growth all leave one side a little different. A score in the 80s or 90s is typical of a clean frontal photo. Lower usually means the head was turned.

Why your jawline changes between photos

Take three photos in one afternoon and the jawline test can return three different labels. That is not a fault in the measurement. The jaw outline is one of the parts of the face most affected by how a photo is taken.

Camera distance matters most. A phone at 30 centimetres is a wide-angle lens close to a three-dimensional object. It enlarges whatever is nearest, the nose and the centre of the face, and shrinks the outline of the jaw. The ratio drops and the label slides toward Narrow. Retake at arm's length or further.

Head tilt changes both angles. Chin down foreshortens the lower face and pulls the jaw corners inward. Chin up does the opposite. Turning the head moves one jaw corner behind the cheek and drags the symmetry score down.

Smiling lifts the cheeks and widens the mid-face, which increases the cheekbone width in the ratio. The effect varies but usually pushes the label softer. A relaxed, closed-mouth expression gives the most repeatable reading.

A beard is a special case. The model estimates the bone contour under facial hair, and for stubble or a short beard that estimate is reliable. A full beard adds real uncertainty, and so does hair falling over the jaw.

Body composition and age change the jawline for real, but not the bone. Fat under the chin and along the jaw softens the outline, and skin laxity with age does the same. Losing or gaining weight can shift the definition score by a band without the bone moving.

How to get a more defined jawline (what actually works)

Search for how to get a jawline and you will find gum, jaw exercisers, mewing tutorials and a great deal of confidence. It is worth separating what changes the bone from what only changes how a jaw reads.

What does not reshape the bone

Chewing gum does not reshape the mandible in an adult. It works the masseter, the chewing muscle on the side of the jaw, and heavy chewing over a long time can make that muscle slightly larger. That is muscle, not bone, and usually too small to see.

Mewing, resting the tongue against the roof of the mouth, has no good evidence behind it for changing adult facial bone. The mandible and maxilla finish growing by the early twenties. Tongue posture may matter during childhood development, which is a conversation for an orthodontist, not a lever an adult can pull.

Jaw exercisers, the silicone balls you bite on, train the same masseter muscle. There is no good evidence that they change bone, and overuse can strain the jaw joint.

What changes how a jawline reads

Body-fat percentage is the biggest lever most adults have. The jawline is one of the first places fat is stored and one of the first it leaves. A modest change in body composition can move a jaw from Tapered to Defined, because the soft tissue over the bone is what the camera sees.

Posture costs nothing. A chin held level and pushed slightly forward stretches the skin under the jaw and separates the jawline from the neck. Chin down or shoulders rounded does the reverse.

Lighting from above and slightly to one side casts a shadow under the jaw that draws the outline. Flat, front-on light from a phone screen removes it. Hairstyle and beard shape can add width, remove it, or move the visual weight of the face up or down.

Procedures

Changing the actual shape of the jaw or chin is a conversation with a dentist, an orthodontist or a surgeon. Filler, chin or jaw implants and orthognathic surgery all exist, each with trade-offs. A photo tool cannot tell you whether any of them is right for you, and this page does not try.

Styling for your jaw: hair, beard, makeup and glasses

Most of what people want from a jawline is a face that looks balanced, and styling gets you further toward that than any exercise. The idea throughout is simple: add width where the face is narrow, and soften or lengthen where it is wide.

Hair

On an angular or defined jaw, length that ends below the jaw, soft layers and volume at the crown draw the eye up and stretch the face. A blunt bob that stops exactly at the jaw widens it.

Beard

For men, a beard is the most direct tool. Fuller growth along the jaw and under the chin adds width to a narrow or tapered jaw. Keeping it short at the sides and squaring the edges under the chin builds a corner where the bone tapers.

Makeup

Contour and blush do with makeup what a beard does with hair. To sharpen a soft or tapered jaw, blend a cool-toned contour shade just under the jawbone, from the ear toward the chin, to deepen the natural shadow. A touch of highlight along the top edge of the bone lifts it.

To soften an angular jaw, skip the contour under the jaw and place blush higher and further back on the cheekbones, sweeping toward the temples. A pointed chin can take blush lower and more horizontal, plus a little contour at the chin tip.

Collars and necklines

A neckline frames the jaw from below. On an angular jaw, rounded collars, scoop and crew necklines and soft fabrics take the edge off. On a tapered or narrow jaw, pointed collars, V-necks and structured shoulders add the angles the jaw itself does not have.

Glasses

Frame width relative to the jaw is the rule that matters. On a narrow jaw, frames slightly wider than the cheekbones, with a heavier lower rim, balance the taper below. On an angular jaw, rounder frames with lighter lower rims soften the geometry.

How to get an accurate reading

The jaw is the part of the face most affected by camera position, so a few habits make the difference between a repeatable reading and a random one. None of these change your face, only how well the model can see it.

  • Hold the phone at arm's length or further, then crop. A close selfie shrinks the jaw outline and pushes the label toward Narrow.
  • Keep the camera at eye level. Chin down narrows the jaw; chin up widens it.
  • Face the camera straight on. The test flags a photo past 12 degrees of turn and asks for a retake past 25.
  • Use a relaxed, closed-mouth expression. A smile lifts the cheeks and changes the ratio.
  • Pull hair back off the jaw and ears so the model can see the outline on both sides.
  • With a full beard, expect more uncertainty in the angle readings and treat the width ratio as the more reliable number.
  • Light your face from slightly above, evenly on both sides.

Take two or three photos under the same conditions. If they agree within a few points, you have a stable number. If not, the photo, not your jaw, changed.

Yes, on plenty of faces, and preferences vary more than the internet suggests. A tapered jaw and a pointed chin are the classic heart and oval shapes, which turn up constantly among faces people rate highly, for women and men alike. Research on facial preferences finds real differences between cultures, eras and individuals. A defined jaw is one look among several, not a requirement.
