The rule

A round face measures close to 1.0 on the length to width ratio, with the cheeks as the widest point and a jaw that curves rather than turns a corner. Nothing about it needs hiding. The job of the haircut is to change the proportion: make the face read longer and narrower than the outline alone suggests.

A crew cut works if the top is left long enough to stand up, roughly a finger's width, over a taper. A French crop is similar with the fringe worn down; on a round face keep the fringe short and textured, not a straight blunt line, which cuts the face off and shortens it.

Sides, fades and the neckline

Round is a common reading and an easy one to get wrong from a photo taken too close. A phone held at arm's length widens the cheeks and jaw, so a long oval can read round. Take the photo from a metre away, face the camera straight on, and take the runner-up seriously if the confidence is under 50.
