The Light Spring color palette

Light Spring is the palest of the warm seasons: light skin, light hair, light eyes, and a golden glow under all three. Its palette is warm, light and clear, like the first sunny week of the year.

Are you a Light Spring?

Light Spring is the lightest of the three Spring seasons. Depth is the leading trait: skin, hair and eyes are all light, and the family is warm, so everything carries a faint golden or peach glow. Contrast is low. Nothing on the face stands out sharply against anything else.

Skin is fair to light with an ivory, peach or golden tint. It flushes pink in heat or cold but never reads rosy at rest, and it tans to a light gold rather than a deep bronze. Freckles are common and are warm brown, not grey.

Hair is light golden blonde, strawberry blonde or a light brown with visible gold in daylight. Many Light Springs were white-blonde as children and darkened toward honey. The hair lightens quickly in summer.

Eyes are light: clear blue, aqua, light green or a light hazel with gold flecks. The iris is bright rather than smoky, and the whites of the eyes look clean next to the skin. Brows and lashes are usually light too.

On the color analysis test, a Light Spring reads light on the ITA depth scale, above about 55 degrees, with a skin hue that leans warm. Depth decides the sub-type before clarity does, so a Light Spring can score medium on the contrast gauge and still land here.

If your skin reads light but hue lands in the neutral band, the tool says whether you lean warm or cool. A warm lean lands in Light Spring, a cool lean in Light Summer. The two are close, and the section below on sister seasons shows how to tell them apart.

How to wear the Light Spring palette

The palette above is the working set. Peach, coral pink and buttercup are the signature colors, the ones that make the skin look even and the eyes brighter. Mint, light aqua and sky blue are the cool-looking colors that still carry enough warmth to work. Light violet is the one purple that does.

The rule for a Light Spring is light and warm together. A color can be warm but too dark, like rust, or light but too cool, like lavender. Both drain the face. When a color is right, the skin looks clear and the jaw and cheekbones read sharper without makeup.

Neutrals are cream, camel, a light warm grey and soft navy. Cream replaces white, which can look bluish next to warm skin. Camel replaces beige and tan. Soft navy is the darkest color that still belongs next to the face, and it works for suits, coats and jackets.

For men, this translates to cream or ivory shirts over white, camel or light warm grey knitwear, a soft navy suit over charcoal, and a peach or light aqua tie or pocket square. A light blue shirt works if it leans aqua rather than ice.

Pair colors of similar lightness. Peach with mint, buttercup with sky blue, cream with camel. Low contrast pairings echo the low contrast of the face. A dark bottom with a light top is fine; the light color should be the one nearest the face.

Colors to avoid

Black is the main one. Against Light Spring coloring it looks heavy, deepens shadows under the eyes and makes the hair look flat. Charcoal and dark grey do the same. When you need dark, use soft navy, chocolate brown or a deep camel.

Icy pastels, the very cool light colors that suit Winters, look like a different palette laid over the face. Ice blue, ice pink and lavender-grey turn the skin sallow. Dusty colors, like mauve, dusty rose and greyed blue, make a Light Spring look tired.

Strong, dark, warm colors are also out. Rust, burgundy, olive and mustard are warm but far deeper than the face and pull attention to the clothes. If you love one of these, wear it away from the face or in a lighter version: salmon for rust, honey for mustard.

Makeup for a Light Spring

Lips: peach, coral pink and warm nude. Sheer and satin finishes suit the softness better than full-coverage mattes. A clear coral is the evening lip. Avoid berry, plum and blue-based reds, which turn the teeth yellow and the skin grey.

Blush: peach and apricot, applied lightly at the top of the cheek. The natural flush of a Light Spring is peach, so a peach blush looks like health rather than makeup. Cool pink blush looks painted on.

Eyes: champagne, light bronze and soft warm brown. Skip black liner and mascara; a brown or navy liner defines the eye without a hard ring. A light gold shimmer on the inner corner brightens light eyes.

Brows: keep them a shade lighter than you think. Dark brow pencil is the fastest way to add a contrast the face does not have. A taupe-blonde or light golden brown pencil matches most Light Spring brows.

Hair color

Golden blonde, honey and light strawberry are the natural fit. They match the warmth of the skin and keep the low contrast that defines the season. Light warm brown works for a darker look, and caramel balayage adds depth without cooling the face.

Ash blonde, platinum and silver tones cool the hair and make warm skin look sallow. Dark brown and black add a contrast that the eyes and skin cannot match, so the hair reads as the first thing you see. If you go darker, stop at a warm caramel.

Metals and jewelry

Light yellow gold and rose gold, polished rather than antiqued. Gold picks up the warmth of the skin, and rose gold picks up the peach. Silver and platinum can look cold next to a Light Spring, though a fine silver piece is fine when it sits away from the face.

Stones: peach moonstone, aquamarine, citrine, light amber and pearls with a cream tint. Diamonds work in a warm setting. Avoid heavy dark stones like onyx and garnet, which act like black.

Light Spring vs Light Summer vs True Spring

Light Summer is the cool sister. Both seasons are light and low in contrast, so the difference is temperature. A Light Summer has pink or neutral skin, ash hair and grey or blue eyes. Hold peach and powder pink up to your face. Peach evens the skin on a Light Spring; powder pink does it on a Light Summer.

True Spring is the warmer, richer sister. Warmth leads rather than lightness, so a True Spring has more gold in the hair, deeper eyes and more contrast between hair and skin. Hold warm coral and peach side by side. Warm coral looks balanced on a True Spring and slightly loud on a Light Spring.

Bright Spring shares the warmth and the clarity but has high contrast, with bright eyes and darker hair. If people notice your eyes before anything else, and your hair is brown or darker, the Bright Spring page is worth a read.

How to confirm your season at home

Stand by a window in daylight with no makeup, hair pulled back, and a white towel over your shoulders. Hold the four test colors from the palette above against your face, one at a time: peach, light aqua, cream and buttercup. Then hold up the same four from the Light Summer page.

The right colors make the skin look even, the eyes clearer and the shadows under the jaw shorter. The wrong colors bring up redness, grey and the shadows under the eyes. Take a photo of each pair if you cannot see it live. The camera exaggerates the effect.

The color analysis test does the same comparison with numbers. It reads your skin hue, depth and contrast after white balancing on the whites of your eyes, so room light matters less than it does in the mirror. Retake in daylight if the lighting warning appears.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Light Spring colors?

Light, warm, clear colors: peach, coral pink, buttercup yellow, mint, light aqua, sky blue, light violet, cream and camel. The palette avoids black, dark grey and anything dusty or icy. Warm pastels are the core; a soft navy and camel are the darkest neutrals.

Can a Light Spring wear black?

It can, but black sits heavily against light warm coloring and shows every shadow under the eyes. Soft navy, camel, warm grey or chocolate do the job of black with less weight. If black is required, keep it away from the face with a cream or peach layer on top.

What is the difference between Light Spring and Light Summer?

Temperature. Both are light and low in contrast, but Light Spring is warm, with peach or golden skin and gold in the hair, and Light Summer is cool, with pink or neutral skin and ash hair. Hold peach and powder pink up to your face: the one that evens out your skin tells you.

Which hair colors suit a Light Spring?

Golden blonde, honey blonde, light strawberry and light warm brown. Ash blonde makes the skin look sallow, and black hair adds a contrast the face does not have. If you go darker, stay in a warm caramel range.
